The Instructor: Justin Maas, SFCA
Justin Maas is a Canadian portrait artist who has been working professionally for more than 20 years. He is best known for his “famous faces” series of portraits on social media where he posts daily drawings of your favourite celebrities. Justin credits Ewan McGregor as a catalyst for the series. “One day, prior to ever thinking of doing a whole series, I posted a drawing of Ewan just before I went to bed. I woke up to over 600 emails - because Ewan had retweeted it. It got me thinking: ‘there’s something to explore here.' That one repost led to over 50 commission requests and 10 finalized, completed commissions. Maas’ work has now been reposted and retweeted by hundreds of celebrities including Dwayne Johnson, Queen Latifah, Rosario Dawson, Zoe Saldana, Howie Mandel, Paul McCartney, Mr Bean, Ice Cube, Martin Lawrence, Viola Davis and many many more.
His book “Drawing Realistic Pencil Portraits Step by Step” is available in stores and online. Justin teaches and is available for commissions at www.justinmaas.com A multi-award winning artist, he is a Senior Signature Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists (SFCA) and an Elected Member of the Society of Canadian Artists (SCA).
“When I was a teenager, a critic once said of my work ‘why not just take a photo?’ That has always stuck with me and challenged me to try to make my portrait drawings show something that a photo can’t. By playing with focal points, areas of detail and contrast, I like to think that my drawings go beyond what most photos say about the subject.” ~ Justin Maas
