The Concept Game with Leanne Christie, SFCA

    Course Information

    Date: Tuesdays, October 27th & November 3rd, 2026

    Time: 6.00 PM - 8.30 PM (PDT)

    Location: Online Via Zoom

    Level: Intermediate/Advanced

    Workshop Overview:

Unsure whether your concept is landing, or whether your voice is actually visible in your work? Join Leanne for a two-session online workshop designed to test your paintings and uncover more powerful ways to translate what excites you about your practice.

This workshop includes preparatory reading and time-sensitive homework between sessions.

Session One: Leanne will examine the submitted work and attempt to verbalize the concept, the tools the artist used to communicate it, and what they appear to prioritize in their medium. Before the session, each attendee will also receive the other participants' images to form their own understanding of the work's concept. This is an interactive, discussion-based session; the goal is to leave with concrete ideas for expressing your voice more powerfully.

Session Two: Leanne will attempt to attribute the painting made since Session One to a specific artist, based on the work and conversations from the previous session. Each attendee will also receive the new paintings and make their own attributions. This interactive, discussion-based session helps you identify where you're struggling and chart a path toward solutions.

    Workshop Preparation

    Before Session One

    • Reading (approx. 1.5 hrs)
    • Submit one painting that best communicates your concept and voice one week before the Session One
    • Review images from other participants: identify their concept, the tools they used to communicate it, and what seems important to them in their medium

    Before Session Two

    • Paint a new work, photograph it, and submit at least 48 hrs in advance (does not need to be large or complex)
    • Review the other participants' new work and assign each to an artist

About the instructor - Leanne Christie, SFCA:

Urban Oil painter Leanne M Christie has a reputation for complex paintings that are built with powerful brushwork and the sophisticated manipulation of her medium. Christie’s concept of complexity through the inclusion of active and passive time as a catalytic element in the paintings; finds the perfect partner in her urban subjects, which are naturally founded on the complex relationships of the urban citizen and urban politics. Born and raised in South Africa, Christie moved to the Canadian West Coast in the late 2000’s after a period of 10 years abroad that had originated as a 2 week holiday after the completion of her Bachelor of Fine Art from Rhodes University, Makhanda in the Eastern Cape.
