Workshop Overview:
For beginners interested in sketching for travel to advanced painters looking for new inspiration outside the studio. Plein Air is a wonderful way to escape the online world, practice mindful observation and find inspiration in nature & our urban surroundings. Working directly from life can be a JOY but only if you are prepared and know your equipment. Learn the basics BEFORE investing in more equipment to customise this practice to your needs and enjoy a lifetime of creative benefits.
Each year the Federation FCA hosts a Plein Air retreat – in great locations, with the guidance of talented instructor/artists and together with other painters to share the creative gathering.
A beginner or advanced painter - If you are completely new to Plein air - painting on location can be a challenge. Dealing with changing weather, light & conditions – while trying to experience the creative benefits. Using a different easel, palette or tripod set up and of course safely packing all the gear you will need on site.
Spend a day together to:
· Check out various equipment set ups for: Acrylic, Oils, Watercolor, Gouache & Pastel.
· Practice with your own plein air kit – or - learn what works best for you (before you buy!)
· Get valuable advice on how/what to pack and prep for painting on site.
· Relax and enjoy watching Jan DEMO on site; unpack, set up, sketch, prep, paint & pack up!
· Do a practice set up, composition sketch & initial layout for your own plein air painting on site.
· Gain confidence with tips for travelling and be prepared to meet the challenges and enjoying the experience!
· Learn about using a limited palette, paint storage, travel, packs & carts, plein air equipment sources, taking on site reference pics and more.
About the instructor - Jan Poynter, AFCA:
Sunshine Coast artist, JAN POYNTER grew up on the North Shore. Working as a professional illustrator & designer for over 40 years, Jan’s designs have been applied to international branding, product, literature, and architecture. Her public art projects in Gibsons, Sechelt, Haida Gwaii and West Vancouver, include murals and street art projects. Jan produced her first coin design for the Royal Canadian Mint in 2016 and has now created 6 RCM Collector Coins.
With a passion for plein air painting Jan finds inspiration in the landscape near and far. Her latest series of dramatic landscapes are inspired and informed by painting on location throughout British Columbia. Working in acrylic, watercolor and mixed media Jan’s original paintings feature bold, tonal color and strong rendering skills.
Jan is an Associate Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and a founding member of the Coast Cultural Alliance and SC Artists Cooperative. Visitors are welcome to her Gibsons studio/gallery by appointment, and her work is featured through online events, in exhibitions at the Federation Gallery on Granville island.
