Town And Country Workshop with Dale Byhre, SFCA

    Workshop Information

    Date: Saturday & Sunday, October 24th & 25th, 2026

    Time: 10.00 AM - 4.00 PM (PDT)

Location: Federation Academy on Granville Island, 1310 Johnston St, Vancouver, BC V6H 3S1

    Level: Open to All Levels

    Medium: Acrylic, Gouache & Oil

    Workshop Overview:

Explore the charm of both urban and rural landscapes through a loose, painterly approach to acrylic painting. From quaint streets and historic buildings to rolling fields and country roads, students will learn to simplify scenes into expressive paintings with strong design, colour, and atmosphere.

Each day begins with a demonstration on a 16" × 20" painting, followed by a second 8" × 10" demo in the afternoon, reinforcing key concepts through a quicker study. Students are encouraged to paint boldly with larger brushes, focusing on capturing the essence of a scene rather than fine detail.

While acrylic is the primary medium, artists working in oils or gouache are welcome. Some experience with acrylics is helpful but not required.

Students may also work on personal projects during the workshop, receiving individual guidance on composition, colour, and painting techniques.

    Supply List:

A reasonable assortment of paints, brushes and painting surfaces should be brought by each student.

Paints should include the following colours or similar ones.

    Ultramarine Blue

    Burnt Sienna

    Cadmium Red

    Cadmium Yellow

    Manganese or Phthalo Blues

    Titanium or Zinc White

Any other colours the student would feel comfortable using. It should be mentioned that students should bring regular sized paint tubes and not tiny sample packs. Those attending the workshop will be expected to paint using ample amounts of paint to cover their surfaces in strong brushstrokes.

Mediums such as acrylic medium, retarder or glazing mixtures are all acceptable.

Brushes should include 11/2", 1", 1/2" brushes, plus only one rigger type brush for only fine details.

Surfaces should include at least two canvases or otherwise of 12"x 16" - 16"x 20" in size for personal class projects. A variety of smaller surfaces of approximately 8"x 10" would be appreciated for in class exercises.
